Encore: The Horse, Silent in the Morning, Fluffhead
Quick Lowdown: If this show was judged on the second set and encore alone, it would be higher up the list. The second set finds the groove and is constructed beautifully while the encore is outstanding. Unfortunately this is one of the weaker first sets, and drags this show outside of the top ten. Still like every other show yet to be recapped, there is a lot to talk about.
Set 1 Recap: Easy recap here. Not much to talk about. Weak song selection and not a lot of jamming. This is the type of set that gets you liquored up. “Wingsuit>Bowie” provides a bit of jamming but not nearly enough to save this set.
Set 2 Recap: Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in! This second set brings the heat! The opening “DWD” is excellent and features very little wondering moments. Almost immediately it finds a rhythmic groove and instead of peaking, moves wonderfully into “WTU?”. Top notch. “Carini>Light” follows and elevates this set even more. “Carini” goes bliss mode and elevates the spirit before a sick ending groove. “Light” comes back and thas a section that is off the charts nasty. Trey crushes a funk lick and then Page answers with the clav and the annihilation begins. Mike comes hammering down like a damn freight train. Sooooo good. From there a nicely placed “Fuego” and gorgeous mid-set “Slave”. “Meatstick>Bold of Love” is not my personal favorite but is something different at least. Overall a killer set. “DWD>WTU?>Carini>Light” is what it is all about and what of the great Dick’s segments. I might have underrated this show already.
Encore: Phish fakes out leaving the stage after “The Horse” and Trey goes into banter about “In a Hole”. Hilarious stuff and then “Fluffhead”. For all you “DEG” heads there is a pretty cool one in this “Fluff”.
